The Legend
Chapter One
“Unitas mirabile vinculum - The wonderful bond of unity”
The Adeste Pack thought highly of the power of unity within one’s pack and hence, this was their pack motto. The Adeste pack were thought highly of by the smaller packs and respected by most of the larger ones, the Leaders were strong, clever and kind and there was not an ounce of evil in their veins. They worshipped the Goddess all light packs did, the Goddess Tor. Tor was slightly more light-hearted then Fenris (neutral packs tend to worship Fenris) and this was why they worshipped her. On a sunny morning of early April (April 9th to be precise) the Alphena was deep inside her den, sheltering from sight and sun. Her stomach was swollen, she had been pregnant for a long time now and she could feel the litter on the way. Outside the Alpha was waiting nervously; he was about to be a Father and honourable yet difficult title. He was so excited that the litter was about to be on the world any time soon; he had been waiting for around two suns now. After around two more hours of yelping and barking from the den Reina (the Alphena) appeared at the mouth and gestured him inside. A wonderful sight met his eyes. Their on the soft earth lay two beautiful daughters, one as black as the night and the other as white as a dove. He went to lay next to his mate and licked her ear as the pups suckled. They were now proud parents, Reina and Conan, and from that day forth they were called Sabriel and Aquene. Sabriel and Aquene grew up fast over the next few months, Sabriel’s dark coat getting darker and darker whilst Aquene’s grew lighter and lighter. They were inseparable sisters, going everywhere together, getting in trouble together and listening to stories from Winona, the old storyteller. A year since their birth Reina gave birth once more however only one was born, unusual for a wolf to have a single pup. Reina and Conan now had a son, which they named Tain. He had a pelt of white and various shades of brown, very different from his sisters’. Although he was a younger than them and his sisters were maturing fast they still played with him as if they were all the same age. They played tag and hide and seek, this happiness continued up to sixth months after Tain’s birth where the unity was to be broken. One clear night in September the Adeste pack was ambushed by a brute dominated dark pack known as the Ombre pack. They had a single Alpha called Hades and he believed that darkness will destroy everything; friendship, families and love. The Ombre pack worshipped the dark God Wolfbane, for he believes in the same thing. The Adeste pack fought well however two Chief Warriors were killed that night; a silver pelted fae known as Nikita and her reddish pelted mate named River. Their blood stained the lush green grass on which the pups had played many times and now one of the pups was missing. Chapter Two
“Advocatus diaboli - The devil's advocate”
The Ombre pack had abducted Sabriel; the lack of females in the pack was causing more fights than usual. Over the six months with the Ombre pack she is tortured, beaten and raped many times, she gradually becomes more cold hearted and cruel, her heart turning black, she forgets her kindness, generosity and also her family with the life she once had. Although she hated the Ombre pack her beliefs were turning into theirs, she couldn’t explain it herself. She started following the teachings of Wolfbane and began to see that he might not be such a bad God after all. One night in April Sabriel managed to escape the Ombre pack; they had stupidly called a pack meeting and left Sabriel with one brute guard who she quite easily killed. He may have been bigger and stronger however Sabriel was agile, cunning and fast so she played at these strengths. She felt no remorse for her murder for her heart was darkening more and more each day. Sabriel ran and ran as fast as her paws could carry her, high into a nearby mountain where she howled into the moonlight.
Chapter Three
“Arduum sane munus - A truly arduous task”
Reina and Conan were heartbroken at the loss of Sabriel and ordered most of the Warriors to search for her. Aquene was keen to look also but Conan made her stay.
“We can’t be losing both of you…” He said to her.
After one month of unsuccessful searching Aquene becomes desperate and ran away to look for Sabriel herself. One month passed and Aquene came across a smaller light pack known as the Lucem pack. They were weaker than the Adeste as they did not believe in Warriors so they led a calm, tranquil lifestyle. Aquene asks them if they had seen an ebony coloured fae around. The Alphena, known as Heather, replies they saw one and advises Aquene to travel north. Since meeting the Lucem pack it had been one week. Late one evening she came across an old lone fae who introduced herself as Salome. Aquene questions her about Sabriel but Salome replied in an enchanting voice, which soon put Aquene under and enchantment. Over the next fifteen weeks Aquene becomes a slave to Salome under the enchantment, she guards her day and night and also hunts for her food. However in the middle of the night at the end of the fifteenth week Aquene hears a howl in the distance and is awakened from Salome’s spell. Although she knows the howl is familiar the enchantment damaged Aquene’s memory so she only remembers her name, Tain, mother and father and the Goddess Tor. Her history with Sabriel had been erased.
Chapter Four
“Numquam se minus solum quam cum solus esset - You are never so little alone as when you are alone.”
After the absence of Sabriel, Aquene and Tain stuck together at all times, fearing the Ombre pack would come back for them. But once Aquene left on her own accord Tain felt neglected, alone and depressed. Reina and Conan could see this in him and tried for more pups, but Reina had been through much trauma since the loss of Sabriel that the stress had made her barren. Four months after Aquene’s departure the pack was attacked once more, by a larger dark pack known as the Ictre Pack. All the wolves were fighting however Reina took it as her responsibility to protect her son. She found an old badger den and told him to hide there until the coast was clear and she would come to get him. Tain stayed in there all night yet Reina did not return. Late in the morning he woke up and hoped it had all been nightmare but he was still in the badger den where his mother had left him. He tried not to be too curious to go outside yet his curiosity overcame him. He cautiously left the badger den and looked around. All around him lay the corpses of his pack. He thought highly of his parent’s strength so desperately called out to them. No reply came. He wasn’t old enough to take on the world by himself yet; he needed his mother’s guidance and his father’s support. After trying several more times to get their attention he whimpered out of sadness, now knowing that one of the bodies lying on the ground must be theirs. After a few minutes of searching he came across them. They were lying together and Conan looked as if he was trying to get near Reina before he died. He felt sudden rush of anger at Aquene. If she had been here they might have lived, she was a great fighter, her strength was more powerful that most brutes and faes, she did not have the agility of Sabriel but could hold her ground better. Tain had been angry with any of sisters before, maybe he wasn’t good enough to be a light, he thought. He left his home; it was time to start afresh, but the new emotions he was feeling; hate, anger and vengeance, couldn’t mean that he was to be a light again. He would have to settle for neutral and worship the wolf god Fenris.
“Maybe it won’t be so bad” he told himself, “ Mixtures of the two gives more leverage. I wonder where Aquene is now, or even Sabriel.”
For the next six months he wanders alone, scared of what he might find when he does come across Sabriel or Aquene, will they recognise him? One morning he came across a neutral pack and asked them about each of his sisters. No one had seen Aquene but once Tain mentioned that his sister Sabriel had a coat darker than the midnight sky one of the warriors’ ears pricked up immediately.
“ I saw her,” he growled. “ She was hanging around the borders when I was on night duty a few days ago. “ I asked her for her name and why she was here and she attacked me. Luckily a few more of the pack warriors came to my aid, otherwise I think she would have killed me.”
“That can’t be Sabriel she would never attack anyone for no reason.”
“ Fast little fae she was, darting all over the place so I couldn’t even get a bite in.”
“Oh….” Tain now knew that it was Sabriel. What did the Ombre pack do to her?
Chapter Five
“Ab hinc - From here on”
From now on Sabriel was to be a dark wolf. She no longer had mercy, forgiveness or kindness. Three months she travelled after her escape, living off her memories, now she only had memories of the Ombre pack and how they treated her. In the third month she met an exile from the Ombre pack. He tells Sabriel that he was exiled as he tried to stop them torturing Sabriel. Sabriel understood this and kind of befriended the exile whose name was Faolan. She didn’t completely trust him yet but she thought his story was genuine. Two months they spent together but the Ombre pack must have heard of Sabriel’s existence and Faolan’s survival so they set off to kill them. Sabriel and Faolan were ambushed whilst sleeping. They fought hard but when Faolan was killed Sabriel had to flee. A month since the ambush she wandered. One afternoon she fell asleep in a clearing, the beating down upon her slender body. Rustling in the trees waked her up. She pricked up her ears and snarled into the shadows, her dark eyes searching for the source, her teeth eager to rip out the intruder’s throat. A brown and white brute showed himself and Sabriel leaped at him. He tried to fend her off but she kept biting.
“ But I am your brother!” The stranger blurted out.
Sabriel stopped and looked at him, meeting his eyes she felt as if she had seen them before.
“I don’t have a family, they do not exist. I was created by Wolfbane.”
“No I am your brother, we played together a lot when we were younger, with Aquene, our sister. She left to look for you after you were abducted by the Ombre pack.”
The memories were now rushing back to Sabriel, she now knew where she came from and the dark spot in her mind of what life was like before the Ombre pack now became clear.
“If Aquene left, why are you here and not with the pack, you are too young to be wondering around by yourself.”
“Our pack are gone, mother, father, everyone. They were all killed by a different dark pack known as the Ictre pack.” A rush of feelings now reached Sabriel’s heart. A great finding of where she came from but a sudden sense of loss now knowing that they were gone.
“ Well, after all my suffering you make me suffer some more. I didn’t need to know that I have a brother or history! Now I know I had a family but now they are gone! The loss I feel. It just shows that goodness is weak! All the light packs are getting picked off, darkness will destroy all.”
“ How can you say that?! My heart is no longer as pure as it was but to go over to the other side is unbelievable of you Sabriel!”
“So you are saying you are neutral? Ha! Well you will learn!”
With that Sabriel ran from her brother.
Chapter Six
“Dum tempus habemus, operemur bonum - While we have the time, let us do good”
After being awakened from her enchantment Aquene starts to head home, however she cannot remember the way. Over the next three months she meets a pair of lone wolves known as Domino and Kota and asks them the way to the land of the Adeste pack. “The Adeste pack has been destroyed.” Said Domino towards Aquene.
“Well that can’t be true, my mother and father are the Alphas, they are very strong and clever, and they would not allow themselves to be caught off guard.” Aquene replied, looking dignified.
“Well they were attacked by the dark Ictre pack. Apparently no one survived. Wait, this news has been flying around the forest for months now, how come you have not heard?” asked Kota.
“Oh… I have been away… But you must be lying!” growled Aquene.
“I wish we were, they were one of the best packs alive. Did you say your parents were the Alphas?” said Kota
“Yes… “ Answered Aquene, who now looked defeated by the news.
“We’re sorry,” said Kota and Domino together.
Aquene turned her back on the travelling pair and walked into the forest darkness. Her eyes swelled up with tears as all who she had loved was now gone. She now vowed to rid the world of darkness.
Aquene joins the Lucem pack that she met before, however she does remember this meeting. After two months of staying with this pack they started to talk of a dark fae that had been seen prowling around the borders of their land. The Lucem wolves say they hear her chanting to Wolfbane and asking for his help. For one month they see her. They ask wolves to out and slay her but none of them dare to near the ‘Wolfbane chanting fae’. Aquene saw this as her big chance to be one step closer to ridding the world of darkness and volunteered herself to go.
Chapter Seven
“Aeternum vale - Farewell forever”
Aquene saw the dark fae sat on the bank of a river and started to crawl closer, trying to go unnoticed. Sabriel’s ears pricked up as she sensed something behind her and moved out of the way just in time, a white blur went past her head and landed in the river. Sabriel saw that it was a white pelted fae. Sabriel gave an evil chuckle to herself as she saw the fae, who appeared shorter than Sabriel however more muscled, covered in water and staring angrily at her with piercing eyes.
“Were you trying to attack me by any chance? If you were you failed miserably!” said Sabriel.
Aquene picked herself out of the water and ignored the dark fae’s words. She lunged herself at the fae and managed to get her this time. The two were now in combat, Sabriel trying to bite at Aquene’s neck and Aquene aiming for Sabriel’s face with her claws.
“Stop it! Both of you!” A voice called out from the trees. A white and brown brute emerged from the shadows. Both faes stopped and looked at the new arrival. Aquene out of happiness and Sabriel out of disgust.
“What are you doing here Tain? You disgust me you do.” Spat Sabriel.
“Do not talk to my brother that way fae!” Retaliated Aquene.
“I am both of your brothers” Spoke Tain. “You two are sisters, born in the same litter to Reina and Conan. Their pack is now gone as I think you both know and I think we three ought to work together, for I am neutral so accept anyone.”
“That is because you are too easily pleased!” Snapped Sabriel. “I am not going to have anything to do with you two ever again. Neutrals are weak, nearly as weak as lights!”
“We lights are not weak, evil is the true weakness.” Spoke Aquene with anger rising in her voice.
“Well I don’t have the time or patience for this. You are both weak and will set out to create a new dark pack, one that will conquer the lands and be feared! Farewell.”
With that Sabriel turned and left in search of the perfect land to start her new pack.
Aquene left without even saying goodbye to Tain as thought neutrals were nearly as low as darks and went to create a new light pack. Tain wandered for a bit longer and came across another lone wolf named Dusk. The two set up a neutral pack with Tain as the Alpha and Dusk as the male Beta. The three were divided, the thing their parents feared most, as they believed in unity. Sabriel and Aquene were now three years old and Tain was only two. Three separate lands, three separate beliefs, three members of the same family.
